Hello all,

Here is the commentary for the Golden Compass. If you want something more detailed just let me know. Jason

The Golden Compass, a new-release in theaters right now, portrays itself as a very innocent movie for younger audiences, similar to the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, but behind the scenes, there is an agenda to bash the Catholic Church and religion in general. The movie is based on a Trilogy, His Dark Materials, written by Philip Pullman, who is an ardent atheist-someone who does not believe in God and hates anything having to do with him. Even though the movie has been watered down in its aggressive attacks there is still some points that come across such as the Church or “Magisterium” as it is called in the movie is trying to control the whole world and will stop at nothing to do it. Anyone who has authority is looked on as being a tyrant who takes away our freedom. It portrays Original Sin not as something spiritual but rather material in the form of Dust, actually one of the most absurd points in the movie, and showing how Pullman does not believe in anything spiritual. These points along with others which are even worse, like that God, Heaven and Hell don't exist which are found in the books should clearly tell us that this is something very anti-Catholic.

We should be aware that, even though there might be some very interesting computer graphics in the movie, by going to see this we are indirectly promoting, by buying a ticket, the very principles in the movie that we hold to be false. We can make a very beautiful sacrifice for Christ this Christmas by not going to see this movie and telling others of its dangers.
