Children of Men DVD CoverEighteen years ago, women stopped having children.  Nobody can figure out why.  Consequently the human race is racing to extinction.  Chaos breaks out as society ages and begins to collapse.  The movie, set in a futuristic Britain, seems very bleak indeed.  In perhaps mankind's most sinful and worst days, it seems as if mankind has been abandoned by God.  But something miraculous occurs to bring hope to society.

I was planning on showing this film on August 31st until I screened it myself.  The movie is beautifully done.  The problem I had was the profanity, particularly the use of God's name in vain.  At times I wondered if that was not intentional, for the purpose of giving the impression that people had lost respect for the sacred in bleak times.  Later, great reverence is given to God when there is a glimmer of hope for humanity.  Watching this film was rather like reading a Psalm.

This movie was an "honorable mention" for the 2006 top-ten movies, as rated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.  I enjoyed the movie a great deal, but the profanity was just too much for me to present it to the community.  I give it a 4.5 out of 5.
